Acne is one of the most common skin concerns, affecting people of all ages, from teenagers to adults. Whether you struggle with occasional breakouts or persistent, cystic acne, finding an effective treatment can feel like a never-ending journey. While there are many options available, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy, particularly with the blue filter, has emerged as a powerful solution for clearing acne and improving overall skin health.
What Is IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Therapy?
IPL therapy is a non-invasive skin treatment that uses pulses of light to target various skin issues. Unlike lasers, which use a single wavelength of light, IPL uses broad-spectrum light that can be filtered to target different skin conditions. The beauty of IPL lies in its versatility—it can address a variety of skin concerns, from pigmentation issues and sun damage to fine lines and, importantly, acne.
Rohrer Aesthetics’ IPL system (that MOBO Med Spa uses) is known for its precision, comfort, and effectiveness. It uses different light filters to treat a wide range of conditions, and one of the most effective filters for acne treatment is the blue filter.
How Does IPL Help Acne?
IPL works by emitting light energy that is absorbed by specific targets in the skin, such as pigment or bacteria. In the case of acne, IPL primarily targets two key components:
- Bacteria: One of the leading causes of acne is the presence of Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) bacteria, which thrive in clogged pores and can cause inflammation. IPL treatment, especially with the blue filter, has a unique ability to target and destroy these bacteria. The blue light is absorbed by the porphyrins in the bacteria, effectively killing them and reducing the inflammation that leads to breakouts.
- Excess Oil Production: IPL can also help regulate sebum (oil) production in the skin. Acne is often worsened by overactive sebaceous glands, which produce excess oil and clog pores. IPL's light energy can reduce this overproduction, making the skin less prone to clogged pores and breakouts.
- Collagen Production: IPL helps promote overall skin healing by stimulating collagen production, which can reduce the appearance of acne scars and improve skin texture over time.
How does Blue Light IPL Treatment Help Acne?
The blue filter in IPL therapy is particularly effective for acne treatment. Here’s how it works:
- Targeting Acne-Causing Bacteria: Blue light has been proven to penetrate the skin and target acne-causing bacteria (P. acnes). When the blue light from the IPL system is absorbed by these bacteria, it creates a chemical reaction that destroys them. This helps reduce the inflammation, redness, and infection associated with acne.
- Reducing Pore Size and Oil Production: The blue light also works to shrink sebaceous (oil) glands, which can help reduce oil production in the skin. Less oil means fewer clogged pores and, therefore, fewer breakouts.
- Preventing New Breakouts: Regular IPL treatments with the blue filter can prevent the development of new acne lesions. By keeping bacterial growth in check and managing oil production, IPL therapy helps to keep the skin clear and prevent future breakouts from forming.
How often do I need to be treated?
- Acne Boot Camp Phase: Depending on the severity of your acne, your provider may recommend an intense "boot camp" phase of 1-2 treatments per week for four weeks to eradicate the P. Acnes bacteria. From there you could shift into a maintenance phase, or move on to other phases of therapy (such as different IPL filters to target reds/browns and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or an ablative laser for resurfacing and scars).
- Maintenance: Most people will want to have several IPL sessions each year to maintain their glow and keep acne at bay (quarterly or every 5-6 months).
- Topicals: Having an effective at-home skincare routine is equally important to the work we do in the office. Talk to your provider about medical grade skincare options that will enhance and protect your results.
Benefits of IPL for Acne
IPL treatments offers several key benefits for individuals struggling with acne:
- Non-Invasive with Minimal Discomfort: IPL treatments are non-invasive, meaning no needles or cutting are involved. The treatment is relatively painless, with many patients describing the sensation as similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. There is minimal downtime, making it a convenient option for those with busy schedules.
- Effective for Different Types of Acne: Whether you have mild, moderate, or more severe acne, IPL with the blue filter can be effective. It works well for inflamed, cystic acne as well as blackheads and whiteheads, making it versatile for treating different acne types.
- Reduces Acne-Related Redness and Inflammation: One of the most frustrating aspects of acne is the redness and swelling that accompany it - or linger long after a breakout is over. IPL with the blue filter helps reduce inflammation, calming the skin and promoting a more even complexion.
- Improves Skin Texture and Reduces Scarring: While IPL works on active breakouts, it also stimulates collagen production, which can help improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of acne scars. This makes it an excellent treatment option for both active acne and residual scarring.
- Minimal Side Effects: Because IPL is non-invasive and gentle, side effects are typically minimal. Some patients may experience slight redness or a mild sunburn-like sensation immediately after treatment, but these effects usually subside within a few hours.
What to Expect During and After an IPL Treatment
- Before Treatment: Your provider will likely begin by cleansing your skin and applying a cooling gel to ensure the IPL handpiece glides smoothly over your skin. You may be given protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the bright light.
- During Treatment: During the procedure, the IPL handpiece will emit light pulses that you may feel as a gentle snapping or tingling sensation on your skin. The treatment usually lasts between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.
- After Treatment: Most patients can resume their regular activities immediately after an IPL treatment. You may experience some redness or slight swelling in the treated area, similar to a mild sunburn, but this typically fades within a few hours. It’s important to avoid sun exposure and to wear sunscreen regularly after treatment, as your skin will be more sensitive to the sun.
- For optimal results, multiple sessions may be recommended—typically 4 to 6 treatments spaced a few weeks apart. Many patients see a noticeable improvement in acne reduction and skin clarity after just a few sessions.
Is IPL with the Blue Filter Right for You?
Who is NOT a candidate for IPL? People with tanned or naturally dark skin are not good candidates for IPL because there’s a risk that the skin pigment could change after treatment. Anyone taking Accutane should not consider an IPL treatment until at least six months to a year after they stop using Accutane. It’s also strongly recommended that pregnant women wait to receive IPL until after they’ve given birth.
IPL is an effective, non-invasive solution for treating acne and improving overall skin health. By targeting acne-causing bacteria, regulating oil production, and stimulating collagen for better skin texture, IPL can provide long-lasting results for those struggling with acne. To find out if this treatment is right for you, it’s always best to consult with a laser-certified MOBO Medical Spa provider who can assess your individual needs and create a personalized treatment plan.
